HILL STAFF VIEWS: Aides Discuss Faith Issues in 52 Percent of Hill Offices

(ONE-MINUTE READ) — A little more than half of all congressional aides responding to a recent CNCT Capitol Pulse survey said religious faith issues are discussed — either “yes, often” or “yes, sometimes” — among staffers in their Hill offices.

Among the 23 percent who answered “yes, often,” the respondents included 33 percent of the Republican aides, 29 percent of the women aides and 23 percent of GOP aides under the age of 30. Only nine percent of Democrat aides affirmed “yes, often,” as did 18 percent of the men and four percent of Democrats under the age of 30.

Among the 29 percent who answered “yes, sometimes,” there was a clear edge for the Senate at 36 percent, compared to 27 percent of the House. Republican aides under 30 made up 36 percent of these respondents, while 26 percent were Democrats under 30. There was noticeably more men at 35 percent than women at 21 percent.

On the negative side of responses, 34 percent said faith issues are “rarely” discussed in their offices and 14 percent said “never,” for a negative total of 48 percent, making the 52 percent on the positive side a clear win for discussing faith issues in the office, if not a landslide.

Among the 34 percent who said “rarely,” 48 percent were Democratic women, 37 percent of Republican men, 29 percent of Democratic men and 15 percent of Republican women. Overall among the 34 percent, 41 percent were Democrats and 29 percent were Republicans.

Among those respondents who said faith issues are “never” discussed in their offices, 25 percent were Democrats and five percent were Republicans. Interestingly, 33 percent of the “nevers” were over the age of 30 years, compared to only 15 percent under the age of 30.

There seems a desire to “quantify” what is is happening in people’s lives spiritually. Matthew 7 22-23 seems to suggest that ‘quantification’, words and religious actions are not (and should not be) the issue. It is about knowing Jesus in a deep, life-changing, life-giving way. I suspect that, as in ancient Israel, there will be a few, like Isaiah or Daniel in Babylon, who walk in the courts of power and truly representing the King, others not so much. Just some thoughts
