Significance of Women

If the authors of the Gospels were trying to make a claim, it is unlikely that they would have included women as the witnesses. In that culture, it would have been more logical to have men be the first witnesses to lend credibility to the story. Yet, the fact that women were the first to discover the empty tomb and encounter the resurrected Jesus shows that the Gospel writers were recording what actually happened, rather than trying to create a believable story.

Truth of the Word

The inclusion of women as the first witnesses is a testament to the honesty and integrity of the Gospel writers. In a patriarchal society, it would have been easy for them to omit this detail or change it to fit the cultural norms of the time. Their not doing so speaks to their commitment to recording the truth, even if it went against societal conventions.

Jesus Is Not Limited

The fact that Jesus first appeared to women after his resurrection is a powerful message in itself. It shows that Jesus did not conform to societal expectations or prejudices; rather, he chose to reveal himself to those who were faithful and devoted to him, regardless of their gender. The first witnesses being women serves as a reminder that in the eyes of God, there is no distinction between men and women, and all are equally valued and important in His plan.
