When the delivery room doctor or midwife first received you from your Mother’s womb, he or she knew immediately whether you were a boy or a girl. That first instant of recognition took care of what was to be written on your birth certificate regarding your sex.
Unlike your name, which was “assigned” to you by your folks, that information about your gender was not chosen by the delivery doctor from among multiple choices, it was fixed before you were born and will remain so throughout your life.
But, as with so much else in contemporary culture’s flight from reality, there are those among us who insist that gender is variable, that however you feel, or identify, at any given moment defines what you are.
