EV OR ID? – Why Heme Presents an Unsolvable Dilemma for Evolution

Normally, one starts at the beginning, but in this case, let’s start at the end of a recent analysis published by Evolution News & Science Today (EN) concerning Heme, the precursor to Hemoglobin, the molecule that transfers oxygen in blood.

“To nail the case for design, consider the level of exquisite control in the next hierarchical level up. The human body makes around 250 billion red blood cells per day, and each RBC contains 270 million hemoglobin molecules, each constructed with 4 heme groups. That multiplies out to 27 billion trillion hemes per day!

“It’s amazing enough that each cell in the body orchestrates its synthesis and availability of heme. On top of that, the whole body, too, regulates the number of hemoglobin molecules and red blood cells that carry another cytotoxic substance — oxygen — from our lungs to each cell in a safe, regulated, exquisitely controlled manner. Every red-blooded person should take this to heart: we would be walking packages of explosives if it were not for mechanisms “designed for the purpose” of using energy safely for life, love, and transcendent meaning.”

That’s the bottom-line about Heme and, while it’s a little complicated for those of us normal people who aren’t molecular scientists, EN does an admirable job of marshaling the facts in an understandable explanation of why heme points to Intelligent Design as the most reasonable explanation for its amazing characteristics. Highly recommended.

I suppose the fundamental question would be, Do you believe God is capable of creating a universe where life would occur due to natural laws?

    • Mark Tapscott on October 12, 2021 at 7:12 pm

Sounds like a universe in which natural laws are the efficient cause and God is the final cause.

You didn’t answer the question. The point I was trying to make is that if God could create such a universe (even you believe he chose another way to do this one) then the whole I don’t see how it could happen naturally therefore God argument is pretty meaningless to you. I don’t know when or how God chooses to intervene in the universe. In a video you posted on the problem of evil it mentioned that God intervening all the time to prevent bad things from happening would destroy the system of natural laws that he created and result in a purely chaotic universe. That makes a certain amount of sense to me.

Personally the only miracles I can attest to happen within the human heart and that is plenty miraculous enough for me.

Not to be pedantic, but the heme calculation is off by two orders of magnitude. 🙂 Instead of “27 billion trillion” it’s 270 billion billion. But the point is well taken! Another great argument for ID is the ATP synthase enzyme: an actual rotary machine, which is irreducibly complex. 🙂

Opponents of Intelligent Design are, paradoxically, loud vocal proponents of “Climate Change” and “Global Warming.” Is it logical for those who are convinced that all creation is the result of blind, meaningless “accident”, to be so seriously concerned about preserving “life” and the environment” at all costs, as if there was a purpose and meaning to existence?
To be logically consistent, these atheists should be advocating a philosophy of “eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die”, for all existence is meaningless.” Yet they hypocritically attempt to frighten us with the “end of all life as we know it” consequences unless we follow their dire warnings to adapt to their “Chicken Little, Sky is Falling” propaganda!

This is just an argument for incredulity. ID as the cause for this has not been demonstrated only stated. The human body is incredibly complex and amazing, but this is not good evidence it was designed by a mind.

    • Mark Tapscott on October 25, 2021 at 5:29 pm

So the “complexity and amazing” characteristics of the human body are good evidence of evolution but not an intelligent designer? How do you know this, Clizby? I am asking sincerely because I do want to understand what you believe and why.
