HILL STAFF VIEWS: Most Americans’ Ethics and Morality Get Low Marks Among Staffers

QUICK READ — Well, here’s something on which significant portions of Republican and Democrat staff aides on Capitol Hill agree – 10 percent of the respondents from each of the two major political parties agreed that the morals of the American people are “very bad.”

Overall, however, aides representing the two parties diverged a great deal, with 51 percent responding either “somewhat bad” or “very bad.” The totals were actually pretty close, as 49 percent of the respondents said Americans’ morals are either “somewhat good” or “very good.”

Among the small group who declared Americans’ morals are “very good” were 14 percent GOP senior policy aides and 11 percent GOP Senate aides. Overall, eight percent of the GOP aides clicked on “very good,” while none of the Democrat aides did so.

For those who selected “somewhat good,” there were more GOP aides than Democrats, 52-37 percent, while 57 percent of the GOP male aides chose that designation, as did 63 percent of the GOP operations aides.

On the “somewhat bad” ballots, 53 percent of the Democrats chose that designation, compared to 30 percent of the GOPers. Fifty percent of the Republican women aides and communications staffers each chose this designation.

“Generally, staffers are pretty 50/50 when it comes to the morality and ethics of other Americans; however, Democrats are a bit more pessimistic,” was the CNCT Capitol Pulse take-away on the survey results.
