According to critics of the Bible, that time between the writing of the first and last of the four Gospels allowed the same kind of modification of the original facts to something far different. Thus, the simplicity of the Jesus we see in Mark is very different from the God-become-Man Jesus of John.

Ergo, Jesus really was just a man who had a gift for teaching, great insights into daily life, and a remarkable capacity for making people think he could do miracles.

But all that stuff about Jesus being crucified dead, buried and then resurrected three days later is mere exaggerated elaboration on the original facts.
