EASTER ISSUES 2026: Think You Could Take Out an Elite Roman Legion SEAL Team And Steal The Dead Body of Jesus?
(Two-Minute Read/View) — Okay, there were no Navy Seals around at the time the lifeless, crucified body of Jesus Christ was laid in a tomb chipped out of a rock-hard boulder and behind the big stone with the Seal of Rome that was intended to close it forever.
But there were guards, almost certainly a dozen members of the Roman Legion present at the tomb, and they formed a unit, a Kustodia, that was an ancient equivalent of today’s Special Forces Operators like the Navy Seals.
Why was a guard necessary at the tomb of Jesus, who was notably non-violent and peaceful during His ministry? Because He had repeatedly told His disciples that He would be killed, buried and then resurrected.
The Jewish authorities, who scoffed at the resurrection claim, expected the disciples to steal Jesus’ dead body, the proclaim the resurrection to keep the nascent movement alive. The tomb guard was insurance to keep the Jesus movement dead, or so they thought.
