HILL STAFF VIEWS: Big Majorities of GOP Aides Say ‘Ban the Speed Cameras in DC!’
(QUICK-READ) — Everywhere you drive in the District of Columbia, including at multiple locations around Capitol Hill, the city government has erected speed cameras that use radar to track your speed and automatically issue tickets whenever it thinks you are over the legal limit.
Forget any presumption of innocence with speed cameras because if you’ve ever gone to the trouble of challenging one in court, you’ve experienced the presumption that the camera can’t be wrong and you must have been speeding.
Perhaps the most significant fact about D.C. speed cameras is that tickets issued in this fashion are not counted against your driving record here. What that suggests to lots of folks is that the primary purpose of the speed cameras is to generate revenue for the D.C. government.
So CNCT Capitol Pulse recently set out to learn how congressional aides view speed cameras and if they would favor or oppose getting them off the District’s streets. The results? Republican Hill aides overwhelmingly support ending speed cameras (67 percent), but only 47 percent of Democratic aides do so.
That makes for an overall average of 61 percent favoring getting rid of speed cameras in the District of Columbia. Interestingly, the two strongest backers of the ban are GOP operations aides (81 percent) and GOP men (73 percent).
And here’s a surprise – 56 percent of Democratic women aides back the ban!
