HILL STAFF VIEWS: Congressional Aides Nearly Unanimous Feds Should Regulate AI
(TWO-MINUTE READ) — Getting nearly everybody to agree on anything has been all but impossible recently on the floor of Congress and the same is true of the 12,000+ congressional aides who do most of the daily work of the legislative process.
So it’s news when 86 percent of all responding staffers agree that the government is the first stop for regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI), according to a recent survey by CNCT’s Capitol Pulse.
The 86 percent figure is the average between the 77 percent of Hill aides working for Republicans and 96 percent of those working on the Democratic side of the aisle. Only four percent of the Democrats said “private industry” but 23 percent of the GOPers did.
The data shows similar results in the rest of the usual tabs. On the Senate side, 93 percent of all staffers said the federal government, and 84 percent on the House side. On the age break, 88 percent of aides over the age of 30 said that, as did 94 percent of those younger.
But there may be a hint of future reconsideration in one of the tabs, as 15 percent of the aides working in policy positions prefer private industry, as do 14 percent of the communications staffers. That could be the core of a stronger advocacy presence for private industry!
