HILL STAFF VIEWS: No SNAP Soda Gets 80% Approval Among Congressional Aides

(QUICK READ) — Restrictions on what SNAP beneficiaries can use the cards to purchase are a perennial issue in Congress and President Donald Trump’s administration is granting waivers to stops that move to bar soda and candy buys.

When CNCT Capitol Pulse asked congressional aides whether they think soda should be ok to buy using SNAP cards, fully 80 percent of them said No. The GOP percentage answering no was 94 percent, but only 32 percent among Democrats.

It’s not clear if the respondents who answered in the negative based that opinion on a conviction that drinking sodas is unhealthy or simply because there are far more important items that should be bought instead.

The no response was unanimous at 100 percent among GOP women, compared with 79 percent of Democratic women aides who said soda should be a permitted SNAP purchase.
