CONSIDER THIS: Is The ‘Stupid Design’ Argument Stupid?

Is the reality of cancer, birth deformities and destructive weather forces evidence that, rather than being intelligently designed, our universe was actually produced by an inept designer who didn’t entirely know what he was doing? Or that there really wasn’t an intelligent force involved in creation?

Readers may recognize that argument — inept or broken design — as being associated with astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, the prolific writer and speaker who has often appeared in documentaries on PBS and elsewhere. You can watch what he calls his “five minute tirade” about “Stupid Design” here.

In the following 12:42 video from the Discovery Institute, molecular biologist Douglas Axe of Biola University addresses several of the arguments put forward by Tyson, including the claim that the fact humans can both eat and choke via the mouth indicates a lack of intelligence in design.

After watching this video, I hope you will share your thoughts — either in disagreement or agreement with Axe — in the comments below. Be nice, but be honest about your reaction.

I thought everything was compelling except the final point about not being qualified to critique life. While true in concept, it felt like a justification for avoiding engaging on the question and certainly not a point that would change anyone’s mind who disagrees. We’re all human and can only argue and theorize using the limited tools we have.
