HARD FACTS: Did Jesus Perform Miracles or Not?
Skeptics of Jesus’ claim to be God and the Gospels’ descriptions of His many claimed miracles — including raising the dead, healing the sick and feeding 5,000 — point to the Matthew 16:1-4:
“And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. He answered them, ‘When it is evening, you say, It will be fair weather, for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening. You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.’ So he left them and departed.”
That passage is cited by skeptics as evidence that undermines the multiple claims of miracles, or demonstrates the Jesus contradicted Himself when He said no sign would be given to the generation among which He walked. Either He got it wrong and therefore wasn’t perfect, or His miracles weren’t genuine.
Not so fast there, Mr. Skeptic, says Eric Lyons of Apologetics Press who explains in the following video why context is everything. And Jesus did not get it wrong or contradict Himself:
