WHAT WOULD YOU SAY: Freedom Means …
What does the word “Freedom” mean? The U.S. Constitution guarantees individual freedom to Americans, but so did the Soviet Constitution for the people of the former USSR. Obviously, there were two different definitions of the word involved.
There are also a lot of folks these days for whom “Freedom” essentially means they are able to do whatever they want to do so long as they don’t hurt anybody else in the process. You may have heard this view expressed as “my freedom ends at the tip of your nose.”

Here’s another way to look at “Freedom:” Get behind the wheel of your car. You are “free” to drive it the way you like on a clear road, including going around corners as fast as you possibly can.
But go faster than you are able to maintain control and all bets are off. (I raced Formula Fords for three years in the SCCA, so, trust me, I know what I’m talking about here!)
In other words, as the Colson Center’s Sarah Stonestreet explains in the latest “What Would You Say” video, freedom needs to be defined if we are to have an intelligible conversation about how it is practiced and protected. Rather appropriate with the July 4th weekend approaching, wouldn’t you say? Enjoy!
