WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? Christmas Is A Pagan Holiday, So Christians Should Not Celebrate It! Really?

It’s not heard much these days, but there are still folks among us who describe themselves as followers of Jesus Christ but who contend that Christians should not celebrate Christmas because it is essentially a pagan festival. The Puritans of the Cromwell period in England are perhaps best known for this attitude.

It’s true a case can be made that Jesus was actually born in October, but that is not made clear in Scripture. And the specific date of His birth pales in importance by comparison to the fact that He was born and why. Christmas on December 25 or October 1 or any other date that celebrates His birth, and His purpose in being born, is appropriate.

That purpose, of course, is, as John 3:17 puts it, to pay the price of our sin with His own blood:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.”

And as a result, as Paul puts it at Ephesian 1:7:

“In Him, we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace …”

The latest “What Would You Say” video from the Colson Center makes this and other important points in responding to the claim Christians ought not celebrate Christmas. I hope you will join with me in celebrating the birth of Jesus because it is the second most important event in all of human history.

The most important? His Resurrection, of course! If you wonder about that, check out John 3:16-17, Romans 10:9 and Ephesians 2:8-10:
