WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? Is IVF Ethical?

Bringing up the subject of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and then asking questions about the morality of the process is a good way to get yourself shunned from polite company these days. It’s even become a front-line issue in the 2024 presidential campaign.

Just in case you aren’t entirely clear what constitutes IVF, here’s how it works: Medicines are used to prompt the production of eggs by the woman’s ovaries, which are then harvested and individually united with the man’s sperm. Those judged to have become viable human embryos are kept, while those not so considered are tossed.

So why would any one have any questions about the morality of such anti-sceptic medical procedure? Well, according to the 7:00 latest installment in the Colson Center’s excellent “What Would You Say” video series, there are at least three concrete moral issues involved and they deserve serious attention:

    No. Not a morally acceptable choice. It results in the intentional destruction of a human being. Culling unwanted embryos is no more acceptable than culling unwanted chldren. I feel sorry for the parents who are unable to conceive but it does not justify the procedure.
