Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Committee Staff, Courtesy of R Street Institute’s Casey Burgat

There are basically two classes of congressional aides — those who work for individual senators and representatives make up one while those known as committee staff are the other.

Casey Burgat is a senior fellow of the R Street Institute, which does a bang-up job of tracking Hill staffing trends. He recently completed a comprehensive look at where things stand on committee staffing that should be of interest to anybody hoping now or in the future to occupy such a position. What did Casey find?

Well, just to give you a sample, he found the average male annual salary on Hill committees is $111,000, while the average female receives $101,000. That there is a gender wage gap in Congress is no surprise. What is perhaps unexpected here, however, is the narrowness of the gap.

Casey appeared on C-Span earlier this week to discuss his study. It’s longer than the typical video I post on HillFaith, but it focuses on a set of issues that I believe get too little attention these days.

Definitely worth getting yourself a cup of coffee and sitting down to watch and listen here. You might also check out this interview with freshman Rep. Kendra Horn (D-Okla.) in today’s Heard on the Hill column in Roll Call. Once upon a time, Horn was a congressional press secretary.
