Working On The Hill: Seems Like Just Yesterday But It Was 1977
Check it out. My first job on Capitol Hill was as press secretary for Rep. Robert Bauman (R-MD), who represented the Eastern Shore of Maryland, working from 118 Cannon HOB.
Odds are, this shot was snapped as I was on the telephone talking to Don Baker of the Washington Post Metro Section staff, who covered Bauman during my nearly two-year tenure there. He remains to this day one of the journalists for whom I have the most respect.
Don was tough, straight and fair in his coverage and a solid writer of informative, factual and crisp news copy. I learned a lot about how to be a good reporter by working with him and it stayed with me throughout my subsequent journalism career.
By the way, look at the sideburns. And that wide tie. No doubt that this is a photo from the late 1970s!

It is indeed. Among the reasons I have long admired Lee was his championing what I think was the first journalism major offered by a U.S. college. He did it during his post-war tenure at Washington & Lee University. He viewed journalism as honorable work for young Southern men as part of the national reconciliation he tried to encourage following Appomattox.
Wide ties and sideburns have gone out of style? Dang. I musta missed it.
