CONTRADICTIONS: One or Two Angels at Jesus’ Empty Tomb?

(EIGHT-MINUTE READ AND WATCH) — Put the Gospel accounts of the women discovering the empty tomb of Jesus on the Sunday following His death by crucifixion and burial in the tomb provided by Joseph of Arimathea side-by-side and it can appear that there are all kinds of contradictory details provided by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Are the Gospels full of contradictions about the angels at the empty tomb of Jesus? Not so, according to Inspiring Philosophy’s Michael Jones. (Screenshot from YouTube).

But, as Michael Jones of Inspiring Philosophy explains in the following 7:26 video, when we move beyond a surface reading of the four accounts and encounter them in the context of common ancient writing standards and contemporary language translations scholarship, it becomes clear that there are in fact no contradictions.

And this is not simply a matter of logic such as the fact that one Gospel says there were two angels but another Gospel says there was only one.

Critics seize on this one as if the author’s failure to mention every individual in a scene is proof that only the one mentioned was present. The reality is not being mentioned does not automatically mean one or more individuals were absent.

Editor’s Note: Wednesdays are Contradictions Day at HillFaith when we confront one of the many alleged contradictions critics have pointed to in the Bible and provide the latest scholarship and research that in fact scripture is fully consistent, credible and reliable.
