WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? What Is Truth? Definitions Matter
Among the most famous questions ever asked occurs in John 18:37-38 where Jesus is being cross-examined by Pilate. Jesus tells Pilate that “the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
Pilate responds, “what is truth?” We, of course, don’t know the tone of voice Pilate used or the expression on his face as he asked Jesus that question. But the Roman official posed one of the most famous and most fundamentally important questions every human being must answer at some point.
So how would you answer Pilate’s question? If you work on Capitol Hill, you hear conflicting and competing truth claims all day, every day. Republicans see the world one way and Democrats quite another. Can they both be right at the same time? And if not, how do we sort out conflicting truth claims?
And does it really matter in the final analysis which one is right if truth is subjective? In the following “What Would You Say” series 5:28 video, Cold-Case Christianity’s J. Warner Wallace offers three big reasons why it supremely matters how truth is defined:
