HILL STAFF VIEWS: Dem Aides Lead Opposition to Govt. AI Equity Stakes
(QUICK READ) — It seems impossible these days to find a place where everybody isn’t talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI), and on this issue at least, it appears from the latest CNCT Capitol Pulse survey of congressional staffers that they have a clear view of the government’s role.
That view is, according to 63 percent of the respondents, either that they “strongly oppose” or “somewhat oppose” government having ownership stakes in private firms producing AI products and product development.
As things presently stand, the federal government owns equity stakes of one kind or another in semiconductors, quantum computing, defense industries, housing finance and the steel industry.
In something of a surprise given the Democratic record of favoring expansion of the federal government, 67 percent of the responding Democrats said they strong oppose, compared to just 30 percent of the Republican aides. The proportion switched among those somewhat opposed, with 24 percent being Republican and five percent Democrats.
AI industry strategists should take note that 88 percent of the Democratic women were in the strongly oppose category as were Democratic House staffers.
At the other of the opinion spectrum, most of the somewhat support for the government getting into ownership at some level of AI enterprising came Rfrom epublicans at 37 percent (Dems equalled 17 percent here). Curiously, among the strongly support cadre, Democrats made up 11 percent and the GOPers nine percent.
Among younger aides, 33 percent of the somewhat support were Republicans Jr Policy aides, with 22 percent being Democrats under 30.
