HILL STAFF VIEWS: Majority of Congressional Aides Refuse Gamble on Sports Betting

(QUICK READ) — College and pro football seasons are in full swing and so is the growing sports betting industry, but a clear majority — 53 percent — of congressional aides responding to a CNCT Capitol Pulse Survey aren’t picking up the cards on the table.

The 53 percent majority opposition is noticeably intense, with fully 30 percent saying “Wish it was illegal” and another 23 percent declaring they “Can’t Stand it.” On the other side, those who favor sports gambling constituted 17 percent of the respondents, saying “All For It.”

Then there’s the “Meh” people in the middle, fully 30 percent of the respondents, who apparently couldn’t care less one way or the other about sports betting.

Digging deeper into the data reveals a couple of really interesting patterns. First, sports betting is mainly a guy thing, as seen in the fact Democratic men made up 30 percent and GOP men 26 percent of the All For Its. Democratic women? Zero percent of the supporters, compared to 14 percent being GOP women.

Second, congressional aides working in Republican offices tend to be more inclined to like sports betting, as 23 percent of the All For Its were GOPers, compared to 10 percent being Democrats.
