WHAT WOULD YOU SAY: Are You on The ‘Wrong Side of History?’

(FOUR-MINUTE VIEW) — Karl Marx, author of The Communist Manifesto and inspirer of totalitarian regimes that have murdered hundreds of millions of human beings for no reason other than they were of the “wrong class,” claimed his philosophy was at the heart of human history.

Which “side of history” are you on? Does history actually have any sides? (Screenshot from YouTube).

Put another way, Marx saw himself and his followers as being on the “right side of history.” Setbacks might occur from time to time, but on the whole, the inevitable momentum guaranteed Communist victory in the end.

In the decades after Marx left this Earth, it became quite common to hear folks on the Left side of the political spectrum to describe themselves as being “on the right side of history.” This feeling of inevitability often leads to arrogance and over-confidence.

Conversely, according to Democratic Socialists, Fabian Socialists, Industrial League “Wobblies, ” European Anarchists, and a host of related ideologies of the Left, those who disagreed with them were “on the wrong side of history.” In the eyes of the accusers, that was not a good place to be!

Unfortunately, such attitudes remain anything but rare in contemporary American political discussion. So what do you say when somebody lays that accusation on the table in a discussion? In the latest “What Would You Say? video from the Colson Center, three highly reasonable responses are suggested. What would you say?
